Women's Cross Country Takes Second at HAAC Championship

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. For the third time in four years, the Baker University men's cross country team captured the HAAC Men's Cross Country Championship on Saturday, while the women's squad took home second place just behind Benedictine.

The meet took place in Auburn, Neb., and was hosted by Peru State College. Baker men's cross country has now won the HAAC title in 2011, 2012 and 2014.

The Wildcat men were led by Corey Matteson who took home sixth place and two other 'Cats finished in the Top 10 including Jamie Stuery in eighth and Gunnar Hayes in ninth.

Eduardo Esquivel was 13 and Joe Linder took home 17th. Senior Vinny Tadokoro took home 19th and Carter Breithaupt finished in 22nd place.

The Wildcats will now compete in the 2014 NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championship meet in Lawrence, Kan., at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday, Nov. 22.

In second place in the men's race was Central Methodist, Benedictine followed in third, Evangel was fourth, Missouri Valley finished in fifth, Graceland was sixth and Culver-Stockton took home seventh.

In the women's race, Baker took home second place, with the BC Ravens capturing first, Central Methodist took third, Evangel was fourth, Avila was fifth, Missouri Valley finished in sixth, Graceland took home seventh, Peru State was eighth and Culver-Stockton finished in ninth place.

Rachel Ash ran the fastest time of any Wildcat in a time of 19:08 good for sixth place. Four other 'Cats finished in the Top 25 including, Sarah Hollis in 11th, Jillian Benson in 12th, Autumn Sifuentes in 16th and Brenda McCollum took home 24th place.

For his efforts, Baker head coach Tim Byers captured the 2014 HAAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year award.
