BALDWIN CITY, Kan. The Baker University track and field team opened up the Indoor Track and Field season, as they competed in the Bob Timmons Challenge on Saturday at the Anschutz Pavillion in Lawrence, Kan., and earned six national qualifying marks.

On the men's side Jeremy Gathright earned a NAIA National "A" standard mark in the triple jump with a 14.53-meter mark, and the 400-meter run with a time of 49.30 for a second place finish in both events.

Dayshawn Berndt finished sixth in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.61. Tyson Robke finished ninth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.76 and 10th in the long jump with a mark of 6.25 meters and Greg Henning finished ninth in the long jump with a mark of 6.35 meters.

The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Berndt, Tyler Randall, David Gregory and Gathright placed second with a time of 3:22.81. The time was only a half second off the NAIA qualifying mark.

Billi Pipes and Jana Koegel led the women's side with NAIA National "B" standard marks in their respective events.

Pipes earned her mark after finishing eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.73, which is currently the fourth fastest time in the NAIA. Koegel placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.14.

"What a great start for our track teams to have six national qualifying marks in our first meet," head coach Zach Kindler said. "It was exciting to see everybody out there competing. I thought Baker showed a great representation of what we have and I look forward to what is to come during the indoor season."

Tyler Sloan also placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.27 and Khadijah Lane finished 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.52.

Kayla Hannam and Valerie Schirmer also earned National "B" standard marks. Hannam finished fourth in the triple jump recording an 11.17-meter mark, which is currently the third longest in the NAIA. Schirmer placed fourth in the shot put with a distance of 12.83 meters, which is also currently the fourth longest in the NAIA.

Schirmer also finished fourth in the weight throw with a 15.32-meter mark, while Stephanie Nelson placed ninth with a distance of 13.92 meters and eighth in the shot put with a distance of 12.13 meters.

Hannam also placed fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.58 meters and ninth in the long jump with a distance of 5.07 meters.
